Becoming irresistible to brands! 5 tips you can learn from Omawunmi

Kehinde Ajose

Omawunmi

Celebrities are endorsed for a brand so as to synergize the image of the celebrity to the brand and communicate to consumers what actually the brand stands for. According to recent research statistics, the number of celebrity advertisements has doubled in the past ten years. One in four adverts features celebrities now as opposed to one in eight in 1995. What makes the wonder woman   who isn’t just known for her voluptuous bosom but also prominent for her vocal prowess suddenly irresistible to brands?” If you ask me, na who I go ask?” Omawunmi is unarguably a brand ambassador to Glo, Konga, and   Mortein. In an industry filled with equally talented artistes, talent isn’t just enough these days. Strategy, visibility, plus a good dose of positioning will give you the winning edge any day.

So what makes our ‘Bottom Belle’ diva irresistible to brands? Leggo!

The Credibility Factor

Credibility in this light means having a high level of talent and expertise in your field. Omawunmi exudes this. From her consistent hits, to splendid music videos, to a youthful brand appeal, Omawunmi is the “Ish” when it comes to contemporary Nigerian Music. Her credibility is a premium trait brands pay for. A known   face with a successful career and a huge following is a bonafide candidate for a brand endorsement any day.

The Relationship Factor

No organization picks a brand ambassador that can’t connect with people and engage their fan base. Speaking for a brand is one thing   , building   relationships with people is another. Omawunmi does that effortlessly. From her social media engagements, to her media interviews, Omawunmi strives to connect the dots by establishing a relationship with her fans which is what brand managers look out for.

The Sustainability Factor

According to Francisco Fernandez,:’ We should strive for consistency. That is my conclusion, It isn’t a matter of how popular is a person in order to choose her/him to be your spokesperson. The first screening question is whether she/he is consistent with your brand’s personality and core values and second how does her/his popularity rank among your target group’. Every brand manager chooses a personality who has been able to sustain their career and can also help sustain their brand’s image. This cap fits Omawunmi. Since being the first runner up in Idols West Africa held years back, Omawunmi has combined her work ethic and drive using them as a tool to sustain her momentum to enviable heights. A celeb must have constancy and lasting appeal. This means that the celebrity should have sustainability and the knack to maintain their image and career accordingly. Some stars might have been in the entertainment business for decades, but wouldn’t be the appropriate choice because they ooze inconsistency.

The Leadership Factor

Omawunmi is one of the most respected women in Nigeria’s entertainment and an inspiration to young damsels coming into the industry. Since being in the industry this multi talented beauty with a spectacular voice has won various awards: In 2009, she won HipHop World Awards Best Female Vocalist; Best Female Music Video 2010 from NEA; Best R’N’B/Pop Artiste 2012 from NEA and a host of other accolades.

She is not only a musician; she is also a compeer as she has hosted many events successfully, one of which was NEA 2010 in New York City. She is also hosted the Headies 2012 alongside MI. This award winning vocal power house is responsible for hit theme songs for major corporations like Malta Guinness, MTN and Mortein.

A brand ambassador has to be inspirational and a role model to others. The main purpose of a brand ambassador is to embody the values, the character, and the overall image inherent to the brand, and use his/her influence to create buzz for the brand he/she is representing.

The Advocacy Factor

One of the pathways for generating buzz for a brand is to recruit brand advocates who will be evangelists, preaching the gospel of that brand. Omawunmi did this with   Mortein, during the world malaria day this year. She created awareness and advocated for the battle against malaria through her Mortein theme song: ‘We take a stand’. Advocacy is more about using one’s influence to drive conversation and engagement towards a brand’s cause. This she did enthusiastically.

The tips I have shared with you has the capacity to make you irresistible in your own area of expertise. Your story will be a bestseller that will not only inspire people, but will become a treasure chest that unborn   generations will make reference to. Go make it happen

Why do you want success?

by Daxx Bondoc

success

The word “success” seems to be always in the air. Are you one of those who are trying to catch it? Grasp it? Breathe it?

The modern man seems to desire success more than ever. He has pursued it with much zeal and passion. He has gone to a lot of sacrifice in the name of “success.”

But only a few actually thought about the success they are pursuing. Most of us pursue success and not really have a clear end goal.

Why I am doing this? Why am I seeking success? Questions few actually ask and meditate. To fail to ask this question is to waste a life time of effort.

In us, lies an inherent longing for happiness, joy and eventually eternal bliss. God has left this desire for joy in our soul so that we will seek him, for only He can fully make us happy. He is the eternal bliss Himself. Look into yourself and you will see that most of your actions are fueled by the desire for joy.

When we look at it, we pursue success to be happy. Success is just the means to find joy.  Some say that they pursue success to be fulfilled, but even fulfillment is accompanied by joy. That is how you can say to yourself you are fulfilled, when you have a sense of joy in you.

Our problem today is that we have sought the means and not the end. We have pursued success for its own sake. We seem to be obsessed with the process and not the product. We sought wealth crazily only to find in the end that our possessions did not make us happy. At that point we are left with the question “What now?” It is a question that has driven many to despair.

To try to be successful for the sake of “being successful” is to have an unsubstantial goal. Success is the process of buying the food, not the food itself. To get stuck in the process of buying the food is to end up hungry.

Being an accomplished person is not as the same as being a successful person. Hitler was able to accomplish to move Germany to war and kill millions of people. I have not seen Hitler’s name in any “success” books.

Can you consider a miserable person successful?

If you end up miserable in the process of pursuing success, then you just have defeated your purpose. All your accomplishments will mean nothing if you are not happy. You might have the resources to numb the pain, but it does not take it away.

“What profit a man to gain the whole world and loses his soul?” Jesus said.

Success is a tool for joy. It is a tool for love as well, for only love can bring us everlasting joy. If you really want to be successful in this life and the next, then you must make love your end goal.

If loving God and loving your neighbor is the motivation and end goal of your pursuit for success, then your success will be substantial and joyful. It is a success that you can take with you on the next life.

So what is your reason in pursuing success?

5 steps to take your product from idea to reality

Christina Le Beau

idea

I have an idea for a product. Now what?
Make sure there's a large market opportunity. I see a lot of mompreneurs, for instance, who are solving a very narrow problem that their child will have for only six months. Don't over listen to your own needs. Do Google searches and see how many people are searching to solve the same problem. Check reviews on Amazon to see whether there are existing products.

What's the best way to prototype?
Start with the elementary toolkit of foam board, cardboard. You can also do 3-D printed prototypes. We had a pitch session at Fenway Park where an 8-year-old came with a 3-D printed prototype. You can rent those machines for $15 an hour now, so they're not inaccessible. If you're starting to get the kind of response you'd hoped for, you might need a visual presentation, too. I love when someone reaches out to a designer or engineer to help move to the next level. Or you can join a hacker lab to try out ideas.

At what point should inventors consider crowdfunding?
They should get a rough prototype together first. One insider tip: Make sure you get at least 20 percent of the campaign pre-funded before it goes live; 81 percent of campaigns that have a head start are successful. Crowdfunded campaigns also are a good way to get some market intelligence. If you can get a product funded, that's a good validator. The main drawback is that campaigners can be unprepared for success--you have to quickly figure out how to deliver everything you promised.

How do you decide whether to produce in-house or outsource?
There are online inventor communities that are useful for those kinds of questions, but you can also find someone with a product in the same vein--not a competitor, but someone who uses the same kinds of processes. Sometimes people don't feel confident just picking up the phone, but anyone who has cracked this really loves talking about it. It's a real triumph to crack supply chains. When it comes time to price, make sure you create a margin structure that later allows for retail partners. Generally you want the manufacturing cost to be one-fifth of the retail price.

What are some common rookie mistakes?
You'd be surprised by how many people have a wonderful product and get a big order from someone like us, and we get an e-mail saying, "I'll be back in two weeks." They're not taking their own business seriously, and that's the kiss of death. It seems so basic, so obvious to not do that, but we see it often. The way you can get things produced today, you don't necessarily need to have the business skills to complement that, so people aren't always prepared.

How you can achieve greatness by thinking #MondayInspiration

Gabriel Olatunji Legend

woman-puzzle-cards-13334560

Today, my intention was to beef the ladies but then I thought again and realized that majority of those who read my #MondayInspiration column every Monday are ladies. How can I then beef my own community of lovers. That is out of the question, at least for now.

Another thing I felt like writing about today is the astronomical growth www.OLATUNJISPEAKS.com site has experienced. We have grown in page views, alexa ranking, patronage, writers, and more but I don’t think today is a day to talk about that too. However, I will be giving out free adverts to those who read our blog and have something to advertise. This is what you can call #OSGiveBacks (I will be sending a Blackberry broadcast about that later in the day) - we are not just running this blog for fun, money or influence. I see it as a family of people who wants to achieve greatness in their chosen field and I am one of the few that God has chosen to offer them the practical solutions to achieve this greatness. I want to emphasis again that you are my family and I am yours – let us continue to treat this blog as our own – I am grateful for everything (I will explain further some other time). I am starting a new column every Wednesday which I have not been able to title appropriately but for now am considering #UNLEASHwithGabrielOlatunji. #UNLEASH started last Wednesday and it will continue day after tomorrow. I will be unleashing great secrets of great men and industries based on proven research and statistics; I have no doubt in my mind that this new #UNLEASH column will inspire you to greatness. If you have a better name kindly buzz me to let me know.

I am so overwhelmed by so many things happening lately that I would prefer not to write today but I know I will disappoint many people, which is why I am writing this and addressing something simple but extremely important.

I came across this quote many years ago and I have not recovered from its impact;

“How great are thy work; your thoughts are very deep”

This quote suggests that the greatness of a work is determined by the deepness of the thought that produces it. This means that Great works are products of Great thought. If you have great thoughts you will produce great works; if you have lowly thoughts you will produce lowly works. What you produce per time in life is determined by the quality of your thinking.

Thinking is a MUST

A preacher said, ‘if you don’t think, you will stink’. It looks like rhetoric but it is more than that. Check out the life of the man that ‘stinks’ (not literally) to you, usually the quality of their thought is very low. Everyone wants to associate with great minds and great minds are minds that think.

Benefits of Thinking Deep

You Become Attractive

Who are the kinds of people that you attract? The quality of your thought determines the quality of your relationships. If you want to attract ‘great’ (I don’t mean popular) men you must increase the quality of your thinking. You cannot be thinking like a kindergarten and expect to be treated like a working-class person. No man wants to date a zombie, except he is only interested in the sex she has to offer.

You Command Great Result

You cannot create a billion dollar idea by guessing, you do that by deep thinking. You cannot solve a national problem by conjuring figures together without deep thinking; you have got to think deep for solutions. Remember that GREAT works are PRODUCTS of GREAT thoughts.

You Explore Your Potentials

I heard this, ‘God gave you a brain so that you can let him rest’. What a profound statement. Most of us don’t use half of a quarter of our brain before we die. We fail to think. We accept problems and challenges as norms; we go through life without challenging the status-quo. We cannot fulfill our God-given potentials that way; we must explore our capacity to think. Those who don’t think will always be servant to those who do.

The man who sits down in an air-condition office with a pen and a paper is getting better pay than the one who stands by the gate in the hot sun or even the bricklayer who exerts more energy. Why is that so? The man who sits in an office uses his brain; the one in the sun uses his physical body (strength) – if you want to get paid more, use your brain and not your body.

THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF THIS

  • Take a problem you really want to solve in your life.

  • Inscribe it boldly on a paper and paste it on your wall or somewhere you can see it often.

  • Wake up every day and sit in front of the problem for at least 20 minutes.

  • Make use of a pen and a paper to jot down all the possible solutions to the problem.

If you do this consistently for 3 days, I can assure you that you will find a lasting solution to the problem.

The problem with many of us is that we want a solution that is difficult but most often than not a simple solution like ‘deep thinking’ via sitting in front of your problems daily is the best solution.

Kindly let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

5 ways the prosperity gospel is hurting Africa

by J. Lee Grady

sad african child

I’m not an African, but in 2008 some Nigerian friends gave me a Yoruba name (“Akinwale”) because I have been to that country so often. My visits there, along with trips to Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Egypt, planted a deep love for Africa in my heart. My first grandson’s arrival this year from Ethiopia made the connection even stronger.

I’m often asked to describe how God is moving in Africa today. Since I’m an optimist, I usually tell of the large churches, the passionate praise and the intense spiritual hunger that characterizes African Christianity. But there is also a dark side, and I think it’s time we addressed one of the most serious threats to faith on the continent.

I’m talking about the prosperity gospel. Of course, I know a slick version of this message is preached in the United States—and I know we are the ones who exported it overseas. I am not minimizing the damage that prosperity preaching has done in my own country. But I have witnessed how some African Christians are taking this money-focused message to new and even more dangerous extremes.

Here are five reasons the prosperity message is damaging the continent of Africa today:

1. It is mixed with occultism. Before Christianity came to Nigeria, people visited witch doctors and sacrificed goats or cows to get prosperity. They poured libations on the ground so the gods would hear their prayers. Today similar practices continue, only the juju priest has been replaced by a pastor who drives a Mercedes-Benz. I am aware of a pastor who buried a live animal under the floor of his church to win God’s favor. Another pastor asked his congregants to bring bottles of sand to church so he could anoint them; he then told the people to sprinkle the sand in their houses to bring blessings. The people who follow these charlatans are reminded that their promised windfall won’t materialize unless they give large donations.

2. It fuels greed. Any person who knows Christ will learn the joy of giving to others. But the prosperity gospel teaches people to focus on getting, not giving. At its core it is a selfish and materialistic faith with a thin Christian veneer. Church members are continually urged to sow financial seeds to reap bigger and bigger rewards. In Africa, entire conferences are dedicated to collecting offerings in order to achieve wealth. Preachers boast about how much they paid for suits, shoes, necklaces and watches. They tell their followers that spirituality is measured by whether they have a big house or a first-class ticket. When greed is preached from the pulpit, it spreads like a cancer in God’s house.

3. It feeds pride. This greedy atmosphere in prosperity churches has produced a warped style of leadership. My Kenyan friend Gideon Thuranira, editor of Christian Professional magazine, calls these men “churchpreneurs.” They plant churches not because they have a burden to reach lost souls but because they see dollar signs when they fill an auditorium with chairs. A selfish message produces bigheaded opportunists who need position, applause and plenty of perks to keep them happy. The most successful prosperity preacher is the most dangerous because he can convince a crowd that Jesus died to give you and me a Lexus.

4. It works against the formation of Christian character. The prosperity message is a poor imitation of the gospel because it leaves no room for brokenness, suffering, humility or delay. It offers an illegal shortcut. Prosperity preachers promise instant results and overnight success; if you don’t get your breakthrough, it’s because you didn’t give enough money in the offering. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves and follow Him; prosperity preaching calls us to deny Jesus and follow our materialistic lusts. There is a leadership crisis in the African church because many pastors are so set on getting rich, they can’t go through the process of discipleship that requires self-denial.

5. It actually keeps people in poverty. The government of Malawi is currently under international scrutiny because of fraud carried out by top leaders. The saddest thing about the so-called “Cashgate” scandal is that professing Christians in the administration of President Joyce Banda have been implicated. One of these people stole millions of kwacha from the government and hid the cash in a teddy bear! Most people today in Malawi live on less than $1 a day, yet their leaders have been known to buy fleets of cars and huge plots of land with money that was not theirs. Sadly, the prosperity gospel preached in Malawi has encouraged pastors and leaders to follow the same corrupt pattern. As a result, God’s people have been financially exploited.

When Jesus described false prophets as wolves in sheep’s clothing, He warned us to examine their fruit. Matthew 7:17 says, “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit” (NASB). What is the fruit of prosperity preaching?

Churches have been growing rapidly in many parts of Africa today, yet sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world where poverty has increased in the past 25 years. So according to the statistics, the prosperity gospel is not bringing prosperity! It is a flawed message, but I believe God will use selfless, broken African leaders to correct it.

What make relationships strong and what matters more than SEX by Alibaba

Alibaba

alibaba

‘This morning, I posted a pm on my BB asking what makes a relationship strong? I also offered some hints… Is it money? Communication? Sex? Trust? Understanding? Respect? Kids? Religion? Attention? Support?

Amazingly, over 45 people jumped on the hints. Some even agree that all of them make a relationship strong and last longer. Some even said once you have say, 7 of those things covered it will definitely be strong.

THEY WERE ALLLLLLLLLLL SOOOOOOO WRONG!!!!

That’s why we are battling every day. We put the ABUNNA before the horse.

The thinks that weaken a relationship are more important. They look like nothing, but as they gradually eat into the vitals of the relationship, the foundation begin to wobble and eventually cave in. That’s what leads to the irreconcilable differences you often hear about.

It is easy to quickly lump these micro killers under a general factor, but trust me, dealing with them individually works better than just saying “The problem we have, She does not respect me”. Not respecting is the final destination. There were many steps to that point.

When you fail to provide in the house, when you talk down on, no show of gratitude, making others look down on, not involving the other in decision making… Finally it builds up to the person short changed losing all forms of respect. So it’s not LACK OF RESPECT. it’s what led to it.

I have seen a MUSLIM husband and a Christian wife live till death put them apart. So it’s not religion. You can practice different religion but still be married longer than even Pastors. It’s not about prayer is the key… Do you treat your husband like the religion you practice say you should? Do you relate with him like a friend? Do you forgive? Do you hold on to issues that have been apologized for and bring same up like its fresh wounds?

Communication. What you say. When you say it. How you say it. Which should not be said. Where you say it. Who you say it to…. May be the reason that the foundation is shaky. You can’t use the tone you use to talk to your driver, plumber, brother, househelp… And think you have communicated. If you say things that you ought not to say at all, and you now even say it in public, TI RE TI BA e NIYEN. You want something but instead of saying you want it, you are saying, “Even Bayo of all people takes his wife to the movies!” You had better renew your DSTV… Because you are going no where!

Some women say men DONT give them attention. And, according to them, it’s very important in a relationship. Some men even say they DONT get the attention they used to get like when they got married. Selfish bastard. She is raising your kids, running the home, looking good for you and being a good employee to a company, if she is employed. So, bear in mind that the attention may not be like you used to get. And understanding matters. For women who crave attention. A MAN WHO IS AT YOUR BECK AND CALL 24/7 is a liability. Layabiliteeeee! So if you call or he doesn’t call as often as he used to, it’s not lack of attention. It’s hustle. Same goes for the woman. Like my wife, she gets home sometimes 8 or 9pm… There are people who get home 10 or 11 sef.

Finance, I agree without a doubt make a relationship stronger. But it doesn’t if that is used as the yardstick for judging the strength of love. If it becomes a yardstick, then the person dropping more rules the relationship and if there is someone with a deeper pocket, oleku!

Simple gratitude, sometimes matters more than sex. I mean it. That someone calls you out of the blues to say thanks for that and this… This and that, can make a relationship stronger. Some people do not know how to say thanks. And on top of that, they will be giving people the impression that the person they are with, is not doing anything. You had better put your mouth where your money is. Because LOBATAN will be a word you will get used to when the generosity is withdrawn. And you will fade into oblivion. Say thank you. Say I appreciate what you are doing. Sometimes I tell my wife, thanks for supporting me oooo. Nothing spoil. Thanks for accepting me the way I am OOO. Thanks for making me a better guy. Be grateful. It’s the two of you DAMN!

Very often you hear, I don’t trust him again. It is not an airtime credit that you just loaded. It is that message that you get that says, your call credit has been exhausted PLS load an all in one card. Thank you. That is, all the different things that you have been doing (calls made) have eaten up all your credit (trust). You’re either going to reload or use a business centre. Trust is rechargeable. Some may give you credit window… What you do with it restores or further erodes what was left.

Friends can strengthen your relationship or burn it up. Some friends will tell you you are stupid to tolerate your bobo having a girlfriend, yet they are still with their own bobo that is sleeping with their HOUSEHELP and neighbour. Or even have fathered a child her BESTO is carrying. But will inflame your own affair. It’s not all advice you get that fit your relationship. But some friends will make your relationship stronger through visits, encouragement, settling small quarrels and telling you your relationship is their model.

I would have written about the role of the family, but trust me, you all know that well enough. Or has your African Movie Magic been suspended?

Next one JARE.

Looking good. This can not be over emphasized. You can do all the other things, but trust me, some people will only go to certain places with you if you look presentable. This has nothing to do with love. Are your clothes well put together? Do you smell well? A good smell, that announces your arrival can delay your departure, I read sometime back. Even if you don’t break a bank, you can look good and groomed, with far less than you think. Start with baffling, sponging, shaving, trimming, and the likes…

You are not a microwave. Stop getting hot for no reason. Even for any reason, control yourself. If you look around hot tempered babes are tolerated. Not craved. That your sharp mouth is for what? Are you a Gillette brand ambassador? Cut it out!

Me, that is writing this much, do you know that, the amount of time I spend on line has become an issue with my madam at the top. I had to reduce it. No need to sacrifice my relationship to please some people. Same people will be so delighted to read that my wife and I are quarreling over one message some babe sent me online. So don’t send messages, call me when she is not around… HEHEHEHE

Ok I think I have let the comedian part of me kick in.

As I was saying, beyond the core issues, a lot of micro and macro things that may seem like nothing but are significant tug at our relationships. Let’s pay attention…

Have a nice day
I dey rush so no time to proofread. GBAGAUN if you like just DONT miss the message.
Okay?”

Funke Egbemode: Ladies, these are the signs that your man is done withyou

Funke Egbemode

LifeSkills

When a man is done with a relationship, he’s done. He may not look like he’s even lacing up his boots, yet he might have left you weeks ago. So, a girl needs to know how to read the signs and what to do. Unlike women who are sentimental about such stuff calling it quits with a relationship that is going nowhere, men are logical beings.

If they want out, they head for the door. Some try to be nice about it, not that I think there’s a nice way to dump a girl, but a man who is through with a woman is through. Trying to stop him most of the time is a waste of time and energy. When a man finds himself in a tight corner, the first person he looks out for is his great self. He may not set out to hurt but that is what happens when someone gets dumped. The dumper is more hurt than the ‘dumpee’, if you get my meaning. I guess that is why the stench from all dump sites is always so terrible. Dumping is simply bad business.

So, how do you know if you are being dumped or if you are the ‘dumpee’ even this minute? First, let us all agree that not all relationships end up in ‘I do’. Many actually end up in ‘I don’t’. If a man no longer wants to ‘do’, you will do well, my sister, to learn to let him go. Not that you can stop him if he’s eyeing the door anyway but it is easier on the ‘dumpee’ if she holds a meeting with her heart and head and they resolve not to cause a scene over the dumping.

Here’s one way to know you are no longer what you used to be to your man. He will stop asking for elaborate explanations about your movements. If he used to check on you three times between the time you left the office and the time you got home and all he asks these days is ‘how was your day?’and  then he nicely changes the subject when you attempt to give him the full gist, let the romance light in your head move from green to amber. If you tell him you have a dinner to attend after work and all he says is okay without asking who is hosting the dinner, the venue and what you are wearing, you are losing grip. As far as he’s concerned, you can go jump in the acid lake.

He will also stop giving you elaborate explanations about his life and movements too. If you see a girl in his car and stop him, if he is a nice dumper, he will stop, say hello and tell you he is in a hurry. Note: he did not introduce the girl or tell the girl who you are. Count yourself lucky he stopped and keep the amber light on in your head. You are no longer as important as you used to be. Or did you actually believe the I’m-in-a-hurry story?

If you have already met a few members of his family, put your thinking cap on if you sense unease in the air when next you visit. Watch out for the smiles that do not reach their eyes, the pitying looks and the almost audible sigh of relief when you tell them you are leaving. Poor folks, they like you but the dumper has introduced another girl to them and told them he was done with you.

When a man begins to make himself unavailable and unapproachable, he’s telling the woman who thinks she is still in his life the deal is off. If you were spending the weekends together and now there is always something keeping him busy every weekend, don’t ignore the alarm ringing behind your left ear. You want to go to  his apartment and see things for yourself? Great idea, you will most likely find what you are looking for, your replacement.

If the man who, once upon a time, could not keep his hands and eyes off you behind every closed door (office, car and kitchen doors inclusive) suddenly looks at you in lingerie, adjusts his glasses and returns to his laptop or iPad, you are on your way to the dumpsite, most likely. I’m assuming you had a great sex life, of course. Now, he sees you in the shower and he’s still walking normal, not adjusting his zipper or joining you, ah? There is cause for alarm and concern, believe me.

You used to call each other like 10 times a day and now it has dwindled to one call a day or fizzled out altogether, you are a ‘dumpee’ waiting for certification. That man has moved on, I suggest you do too. Yes, in my capacity as the Chairman, National Assembly Joint Committee on Intimate Affairs.

7 Steps To Discovering The Kind Of Business To Start

Chinedum Azuh

Opportunity

Some people know what kind of business they want to start long before they're ready to call themselves entrepreneurs. For others, the decision to open a small business comes before they've settled on exactly what they want to do.

Determining which direction to take your entrepreneurial venture can be a difficult task, I’m about to show you how to figure it out.

A creative person could build a business from scratch, purchase an existing business, start a franchise store; or even become a distributor for one of the major brands. Whatever the case, there are several necessary steps involved in figuring out what business you want to start.

List Your Interests
This will help you focus on businesses that will provide the greatest probability for success and eliminate possible failures. Those interests can be anything from hobbies, such as making people laugh.

Other things to consider include working with personal finance, services industries, such as a delivery service or office cleaning business, and computer work, such as writing internet content or graphic arts.

List Your Skills
Think carefully about the key skills that you have in various aspects of your life and work. It’s useful to think of skills as something you can actively ‘do’ or practice.

Get a piece of paper and write your skills down. It doesn’t need to be an exhaustive list but you should aim for a good selection across the various areas of your life and work.

Assess Your Personality
Are you a people person, or do you enjoy working alone? Do you love to serve others, or do you find people a pain? What age groups do you enjoy serving? One ingredient that is sure to lead to failure is a reclusive or abrasive personality.

Think about the people that you have met in business. Who were the ones that you wanted to give repeat business to?

Determine The Risk Involved
Going into business can be scary; especially in the first couple of years. Some businesses are scarier than others. Be as realistic as possible.

Determine The Timeframe
Determine how much time your business will require, and ask yourself if you are willing to commit the time.

Many businesses require a huge time investment. Can you and your family tolerate a twelve or fourteen hour day schedule?

Attend Seminars
An excellent place to start is SADC (Success Attitude Development Center). The seminars are known as “Be Your Own Boss Seminars”. These kind of Seminars will open you up to income opportunities that you may consider starting.

Set It Up Legally
Hire a lawyer experienced in setting up businesses. He will guide you through the paper work and make sure things are done properly. A good lawyer will not just do the paperwork and determine the business type but will also advise you on common errors to avoid that can get you into trouble.

How To Resuscitate A Dying Business

Emmanuel Onyeche and Seun Oladunjoye

Knowing

Successful entrepreneurs deserve praise. First, they had to confront and conquer the intimidating fear of starting a business. Thereafter, they battled and subdued the unavoidable myriad of challenges of doing the business. At the back of their minds, while starting out, were grim statistics relating to the rate businesses fail. They had either heard or read stuff that told them that the chance of their businesses surviving its first year was extremely slim or that 80 percent of them who knew next to nothing about marketing would not survive. They didn’t allow such statistics to bother them. They braved the odds and came out victorious.

This article is to open the eyes of entrepreneurs whose businesses are dying to strategies they can adopt to revive such businesses and be counted amongst successful entrepreneurs. As usual, the solutions come from tested hands – from a very experienced business coach and business owners who confronted their challenges eyeball to eyeball and revived their businesses instead of letting them die to become numbers in the infamous statistics of business failures.

Perspective Of A Business Coach Causes Of Business Failure
Mr. Yinka Fisher is State Coordinator, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, Lagos. In his capacity as a business coach, he says, “A lot of things warrant businesses to fail. The major one is the capacity of the business owner. Does the person really understand what it takes to effectively and efficiently run a business? This might also be tied back to what is called experience, because some people are into business not because they understand the terrain of the business but because another person is doing the business and is making money.

A business might also fail if proper records are not kept. When you don't keep record of a business, you can't know the performance of that business. There are lots of other stringent conditions which might be internal or external. If you look at your SWAT analysis, there are some things that are under your control and those outside your control. There are some governmental issues, but as a business owner, when you are not well informed about such issues, it can collapse your business.

That is why we say, when you need businesses to grow effectively and efficiently, you need to come to SMEDAN. We will take you through the challenges you might likely face starting that business and while that business is on, we will monitor you because we do what is called extension services. It is like a medical doctor taking care of a patient, if you have a small ailment and you don't go to your doctor for immediate intervention, it might lead to serious consequences. It is the same with the issue of SMEDAN”.

Solutions
Fisher says, “There are lots of things that can solve challenges relating to collapse of business. As I have told you, SMEDAN is part of it. Your networking ability is part of it, because as a business owner, you must not just live within yourself - that is why I said a business owner must be an extrovert, not an introvert. An extrovert is ready to meet with new people and the more you meet them, the more you are getting a business solutions to a dying business. When you speak out about your problems, others will be ready to proffer solutions, but when you are not expressing yourself, what do you expect?”

Business Owners Speak On Nature Of Their Business
Mr. Azemobor Gregory, Managing Director, Bethel Mendels Nigeria Ltd, says his company is a marketing company that imports innovative products into the Nigerian market. “We have strong bias for empowerment and eradication of poverty through the products we market. We also empower Nigerians through the resale of our products. Currently, we are trying to diversify into manufacturing and we have started manufacturing of a product known as mattress protector – a complete mattress cover designed with a zipper. It has one side designed with American fabric and the other side designed for nursing mothers”.

Gregory says he started the business, which is in its 14th year, in 1999. “We started very small and we were consistent, despite lots of challenges faced along the line. If I must say this, most people who want to go into business always look at the bigger picture – they want to start big and in their attempt to start big, they will be waiting for the resources needed to start big before they will start. It is not very easy to start big, you can start small – this was how I started. It is going to interest you that I started this business with N20, 000. I borrowed from my mother in the village. But by the grace of God, today, it has grown to a multi-million naira business empire. You just have to be sure where you are going to”.

Mr. Philip Matthew, Business Development Manager, Exclusive Treat Cleaners says his business is a subsidiary of Exclusive Treat International Ltd. “We are into laundry and dry cleaning services and we offer cleaning services for garments, suits, wedding gowns and other types of clothes. I have almost five years experience in the business”.

Mr. Tony Umechukwu, Director, Zeton Integrated Service Ltd, says he is into Information Technology business, selling mainly computer products - laptops and desktops, software, projectors, access control systems, etc. “We also deal with networking, licensing and maintenance ... I have been into the business for over five years”.

On Challenges That Almost Killed Their Businesses
Gregory says, “I have faced very serious challenges. We actually started with the manufacturing of the mattress protector and we made a lot of money in 2001/2002, but something happened. Government came out with a policy banning the importation of fabrics. This affected the business and we couldn't get raw materials for production. We diversified into manufacturing of liquid air fresher.

The challenge we had with this was lack of enough finance and so, we could not standardize the product. There were times my boys went out to market the product, but because of NAFDAC number, they always got harassed and that affected the production of that product. 2004 to around 2008 was indeed a very trying period for my business. I can tell you, it was hell between that period, to the extent that I could not pay for the office we were using in Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, and also I could not pay staff allowances”.

Matthew says intimidating challenges have occurred to his business over and over again. “In 2010, things were very tight, when my business was undergoing financial downturn. I wrote a business plan and made every possible effort in sourcing for finance to revive the business, but it was as if all doors to such opportunities were closed. It got to a stage, when a thought in me said, "Guy, you are a graduate with other professional certificates and you are a trained entrepreneur; why can't you get a paid job and leave this business to come back to it later?" That was how tough it was.

Umechukwu says, “One of the greatest challenges I have ever faced in this my IT business was when I did a business with an organization that involved a huge sum of money which my bank financed. Along the line, something happened and the organisation failed to pay as at when due based on our initial calculation. We had to pay the money back to the bank and clear off the interest. Then, I had to be running around to beg for money. Also, sometimes you will propose a plan, but bottlenecks might not allow its fulfillment, and as an importer there may be challenge of clearing the goods at the port”.

On How They Confronted Their Challenges
Gregory says, “Because of my experience in this trying period, I learnt the lesson of diversifying into the marketing of various products. I didn't start out with importation of products but by sourcing for products locally. So, within that period, I learnt that there is need for one to have multiple streams of businesses for multiple incomes. This is because the market is dynamic - whatever business you have today, there is going to be the challenge of competition.

Technology can also render a business obsolete. You can remember those that are into the business of cyber-cafe, technology has made it possible for one to surf the internet, even on one’s phone. So, as a business man, you must be up and doing, you must strive to market your business, because a business arena is a battlefield. You must be up and doing to be able to source for new products from time to time. Also, you will be confronted by government policies.

That period actually got me to look inward, to develop my capacity as a business man. I was, however, consistent in the kind of marketing I was doing for my business - I did not deviate, as that is the problem most business owners have. Once they have challenge in a particular business, they jump into another. It is obvious there must be a challenge in any business you are doing, but the only pill is that you must persevere and be consistent, because you can't be a master in a particular business, until you have spent years to learn the ropes, to develop yourself and to withstand the challenges inherent in that business. I am saying this for the benefit of those who are facing challenges and something inside of them is telling them to quit for a paid employment.

Every entrepreneur will always face challenges. This is to test your belief and decision to remain an entrepreneur. In fact, challenges give you the opportunity to look inward and learn so many things. Mind you, there was no formal training before we started then, but all we learnt was by experience, and thank God a newspaper like SuccessDigest was there to give me ideas. So, I am equally using this opportunity to give credit to SuccessDigest, because there are valuable lessons I have learnt reading it that helped me as a business man. I will advise our young business owners to invest in learning and retraining”.

Matthew says, “One thing that kept me going was the passion and vision I had for the business. It has always been a thing of joy when I see my staff and it is like I'm adding value to someone's life. Also, my dream and vision of being an entrepreneur and reducing unemployment in the country was one of the major things that kept me going. So, I tried to survive during that period. Aside this, you know as a business man, challenges occur on a daily basis. One of the major challenges is when clients are complaining on a daily basis and you are making efforts to satisfy them, but maybe one or two things are going wrong somewhere along the operational process. Some clients would shout at you not minding your status.

You ask yourself why you must take such humiliation. But you are there to serve them. So, in such a situation, I always remain calm, because I am a trained entrepreneur at the Lagos Business School and I have been to Entrepreneurship Development Centre of Business. So, with the experience, I used to take things calmly with them - I allow them speak their minds and I put myself in their shoes. At the end the whole issue, I try to find solution to the problem, in order to retain them as customers”.

Umechukwu says, “About that my major challenge then, I had to sell a property to pay off bank debts, though this might not work for others”.

On Their Advice To Someone Passing Through Hard Times In Business
Gregory says, “If I am to mentor anybody, I will tell him or her, "don't just jump into any business. There is need for you to carry out comprehensive research about the business. If there is need for you to undergo some kind of apprenticeship, you need to spend more on learning. Doing business is not just about money alone. I have always told people that, it is not just money you need to do business - this is one of the things I have learnt and I have told you how I started. If I'm to put them in various proportions of what you need, money is just about five percent or 10 percent. What you need more is for you to know what exactly you want to go into and what you are doing.

What you need is the passion for the business. What you need is adequate training. You need to equip yourself, because challenges will come. Don't jump into business because your neighbor is making headway in the business. You don't know the price the person has paid to learn all that he has learnt, that enabled him succeed in the business. Also, what I have realized is that, one of the things that ensures the death of most businesses is poor marketing. Eighty percent of businesses die as a result of poor marketing.

You have the product, how will you get people to buy the product? When you get them, how will you relate with them to convince them to buy the product and keep them afterwards as faithful customers? Some also say that the money spent on creating awareness or on advertisement is a waste - they are missing it all.

Here, what has been working for us is that we are not miserly with the money we spend on marketing, advertisement or making noise about our products. On a monthly basis, we spend close to a million naira placing adverts in various media, including bill boards. People should also make use of the advantages of Internet and all other social media to create awareness. Internet has really made it easier, as you can reach out to a whole lot of people at a very cheap rate. Marketing is a skill, so if you must succeed in doing business, you must take marketing as paramount”.

Matthew says, “If I am to advise an entrepreneur undergoing business challenges, the key word to have at the back of one’s mind is: "Why are you into this business?" If you can answer that question, the reason will keep you going in the business. But if you don't have answer to that why, then there is a problem somewhere - maybe you need to do a rethink or take another course of action”.

Umechukwu says, “It all depends on the nature of the difficulties the person is facing. When you know the particular problem, then you can advice. Take for instance, the person is faced with financial challenge - in need of money to stabilize the business and he or she doesn't have  anybody to support, the person needs to source for loan. These days I think you can walk into any microfinance bank with your good business idea and you will be given funds.

Though, microfinance banks are claiming to help growing businesses, but I think some of them are killing the businesses, because the interest they charge is on the high side compared to commercial banks. You know it is very difficult to access loans from commercial banks, if you don't have collaterals and all that. It is always important to cross all the "T"s and dot all the "I"s before you go into anything that deals with banks. When in business, it has to do with passion and it makes you to drive your business forward. If you are facing, either managerial, financial or other challenges, the most important thing is for you to understand exactly where the problem is. It is when you know where exactly the problem is coming from, that you can proffer solution to it. If you are having managerial challenge in your business, it is good for you to get good advice to really manage the business - there are professionals to call to do that for you.

This is because if you are running a business and there are lots of loopholes, you will find it difficult to survive - you have staff in your company doing things the way they like and when you are not there, so many things go wrong. You have to check-mate them to really get it right. Another thing: for business to strive, there should be some element of financial backing”.

Fisher says, “Normally for such businesses having such challenges, there is something called business clinic that we normally conduct and the essence of business clinic is to diagnose the problems relating to your business. By the time we take you through that business diagnosis, we will be able to spot indices telling us that something is likely to happen. Once you start seeing that signal, solutions start coming in.

Different people with different ball games - I can't use client A to solve client B’s challenge. So, when you come on a different platform, I will be able to look based on your business challenges for solutions to be proffered”.

On Power Of Marketing In Business Revival

Gregory says, “For those just starting, there are less expensive below the line advertisements they can do. For instance, they can make use of fliers. Do you know that with less than N4, 000, you can print close to 2,000 copies of fliers? So, don't tell me that if you distribute 2, 000 copies of fliers strategically, you won't get response. If you don't have enough money, you can use bulk SMS, bulk e-mail, there are also free websites where you can place your adverts and products online - olx.com.ng - when they google, they’ll see your products there.

The bottom line is that, our people need to transmit from the traditional way of doing things to the digital way of doing business. Let me tell you, between now and the next ten years, if your business is not online, it will be obsolete. Right now, the office you rent doesn't matter - you can see where we are now; it is not along the road, but I can tell you that we have customers all over the country. We do export goods to other African countries.

The era we are now is not location based, as you can see many online shops springing up - Jumia, cheki.com.ng for cars and the rest. So, I don't need to go to Shoprite to buy what I need. My advice is that they should embrace the digital way of doing business - online platform. If you get marketing right, you don't need to stock products. It is the traditional business mentality to stock products. If you rely on only word-of-mouth to people you know, you can't go far. So, marketing is key - an investment in marketing is not an investment that is wasted, but an investment that drives sales and brings results.

Matthew says, “Just as cash is a live-blood to a business, marketing is the veins through which the live-blood circulates through the whole system of the business. Without effective marketing, no business can attain its vision. So, intensifying your marketing means, firstly, you have to understand your products or services. The next question is: “Who are the persons that need this services or products?” Then: “Where can we locate them?” “What price are they ready to pay?” Before you even go out for marketing, these questions should be answered. You also need to go out and do what we call marketing research.

By the time you do your marketing research, you will know the price your competitors are giving out and you will know why they are patronizing your competitors and also know the fair price your prospective clients are ready to pay to avoid over or under pricing. By the time you have this general knowledge, you can now hit the field - that is to say, you have already sharpened the cutlass just to start axing the tree.

You may also need to organize a marketing team. If you do not have enough resources to build a marketing team, everybody becomes a marketer – ready to go out for intense marketing like doing roadshows, distribution of fliers, sending of proposals to corporate organizations, depending on who is in need of your service. Online marketing is very important nowadays. You have to open a Facebook page for your organisation, join professional networks like LinkedIn, a very good professional network where you can get people that need your products or services. So, by the time you post your adverts and come out with promos, people are ready to patronize you”.

On What Should Be Done If The Downturn Has Anything To Do With Finance
Gregory says, “Honestly, I don't think finance should be the problem. Once you believe or you have the mind-set that all you need to start a business is money, what happens is that, your creative mindset will be shut down. It is shut down because you believe that until you get the amount to start, you can't start. But if your mind is free and you are asking yourself, "How can I do business even if I don't have money on my own?" There are lots of manufacturers there, looking for people to market their products - if you have the marketing skills. People don't understand that marketing is the key responsibility of an entrepreneur.

So, you can start out by reselling other people's products - when you will need money is the time you are going into manufacturing of your product. Let's look at it this way, when most people are going into a business and you go through their estimates, you will be amazed that office space will take about 10 percent. Why don't you look at how you can start a business without paying a dime for office? Furthermore, you will also see that getting the product stocked takes the lion percentage.

You can look for someone who has product to resell. So, I put it to you that you can start a business without you having money, if you have the marketing skill - this was what I have done. Giving you an instance, what gave us breakthrough was that, we understand the importance of marketing and advertising, so I place adverts regularly. It was as a result of this that an Indian man in Idumota called me through the advert and he told me he has about five loads of containers of some decorative candle stands. We met and I told him we can market the products, but we are not buying them and the man said okay.

That was how we wrote an MOU, got a guarantor and like three cartoons of it, through aggressive marketing, within four months, those five loads of containers of candle stands were completely sold out - this was without me investing a dime. However, I was able to realize N4 million - way back in 2008/2009”.

Matthew says, “In this part of the world, the major business challenge is finance. Most businesses, mainly small businesses, are under-capitalized, but what I would advise is to try your best to start small, focus on intense marketing and make every effort to reduce costs to the barest minimum - operate cost effectively. So, as time goes by, you will begin to see the light of the day”.

Umechukwu says, “In every business, the first and most important thing is to have the idea. When I started mine, I didn't have money - I was borrowing money from my brother's wife to transport myself to Ikeja. Somebody out there who wants to start a business only when he or she has N1 million, he or she is just deceiving himself/herself. There is never a perfect condition. Whatever thing you have, you have to start with it - if it is idea you have, go ahead and do something. By the time you start doing it, help will come.

For instance, if you want to do this kind of my business - IT business - what the person needs to do is to get a friend or someone who is into this business and be coming around to stay with that person every day, with a view to getting the idea of what they are doing and as you are there, you will be meeting people and getting their contacts. Later, they will start calling you to supply things to them and money starts entering your account. With this, you start to get money for survival”.

Fisher says, “Talking about finance for a business, I always say in our capacity-building class that, "as blood is to the body, so also finance is to the business." But one thing is paramount: finance does not start business. Finance only comes towards the end of a business. One problem Nigerians have is that they want to run the business all by themselves. Businesses are supposed to be a partnership thing. Initially when you are in business, you can jump-start it, but when the business starts growing up, there must be need for partners to come in.

Let me cite a case study. When I was running my poultry project, I was doing it alone, but when I realized that I needed a partner, I invited a partner into it and we are expanding now as we are doing the business. Doing business alone is like working hard and not working smart - a smart worker will always get higher returns on investment, but a hard worker will get a very low return in investment, because what he has been doing is "only me." When you allow people to invest ideas, inject funds, inject business management into your business,

it will go wide and that is where the issue of venture capitalists comes in. These are new breeds of people who finance businesses, with the aim of letting it grow. They are there to give you managerial, financial and human resources advice and at the end of the day, something you have been doing all alone, you will realize that two good heads are better than one. So, it takes you out of the shell. One thing about business is about trust and making it formal. When you are in business, let it be a business that is registered by Corporate Affairs Commission, so that all documentation can become an official thing.

If you have the lion share in the business, definitely, you still own the business, while others follow. But when you don't allow others to inject their ideas, knowledge and their know-how, it will not grow, even if it will, there is going to be a limit of growth.

How To Become The Most Sought After In Your Line Of Business

Damilola Okpetu

sought after

Needless to say, the primary reason people go into business is to make money. No one goes into a business with the aim of losing all his capital and then folding up the company.
Now, you are in business to meet a need.

There are several people out there who do need your products or services but definitely you are not the only one doing that particular business. There are several other people doing that same business as you. Just as they say, as an idea is occurring to you, the same idea is also occurring to several other people elsewhere - even close to you.

So, for you to make constant money and remain in business or rather for you to always have patronage, you must be the best or one of the best in your field.

We sat down to talk to Agnes Etuk, CEO of  Adicakes and Events, an innovative catering and event management outfit. Here she speaks on how one can become the most sought after in his or her line of business:

There are only so many hours in the day, and when you’re trying to devote as much time as possible working in your business, it can be hard to find time to work on your business. And one of the most important parts of working on your business is staying on top of changes and trends in your industry

Here’s what I recommend you do to be the most sought after in your line of business:

Network And Exchange With Others In The Industry
Talk to your peers, and discuss the latest news and ideas with each other. How are others incorporating the latest methods into their businesses? What’s working for them, and what can be ignored as a passing fad?

Invest In Professional Development
Take a class! Depending on what business you’re in, there are many online or in-person workshops, classes, or events that exist to keep you in the loop. Learning a new skill and applying it to your business is one of the most exciting parts of being your own boss.

Who wants to keep doing things the same way over and over again? Try out new methods, it’s exciting.
Personally I attend a lot of programs relating to my field. That is why I am always on top my industry.

Read Industry Publications, But Only The Best Ones
There is a lot of information out there, and trying to keep up with it all is exhausting. I recommend focusing on 3-4 industry publications, max. Mix news with editorial – it’s important to hear about the latest greatest new thing, but it’s just as important to hear a trusted leader’s interpretation of it.

I read a mix of online sources for breaking news, and then traditional print media (books and magazines) for in-depth editorial and analysis of that news.

Know What The Core Of Your Business Is – The Part That Doesn’t Change
Whatever your business is, at its heart is something that doesn’t change. It’s what makes you unique and valuable, and it’s what keeps your customers coming back. If you’re in retail, you might be selling a different product in the future – but the qualities of the product should be the same (high quality, good value, on trend, etc).

Identify what that core value is in your business, and you won’t be rocked by changes and trends. You can adapt to them, and decide what’s right for you as you move forward. And remember – change can be scary, but it’s also exciting and exhilarating.
