Tennis pro and fashion enthusiast Venus Williams wrote a candid piece recently about how she came to be so good at what she does. She said that there is really no easy way to get there. It may look like all of a sudden you come out of nowhere and are a huge success, but in reality all professionals come from the bottom and work their way up.
Williams jokes that when asked how she became successful she answers:
- Get Oracene Price and Richard Williams to be your mom and Dad
- Work your butt off and you even get to enjoy that most of the time
- Lift the trophy and show those pearly whites!
The tennis sensations then gets a little serious and says:
“But in all seriousness, one thing that all champions in life have in common is that they started at the bottom. No one started out great, and I think that is what people forget. In order to be successful, there is a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice that goes into it.”
She says that it seems that a lot of people don’t seem to remember that people do not become sensations overnight. When you start out from the bottom you need to learn the basics and that can take a lot of time. Some people do start out with natural talent, but it is not something that they can instantly take to the bank. Williams said that you need to make sure that you are trying to go pro in is something that you really love because you are going to be practicing a lot and it will consume your life.
Williams says that she lives and breathes tennis and does not mind having to do all the hard work to get to where she is because she loves it. She recommends that parents start their kids out at sports early on in life so that they can get a feel for what they like and will have plenty of time to develop their skills. They will not only learn about how to play the sport but will learn other lessons that they can use off the field as well. They will learn teamwork, friendship, and most of all, discipline.
